Programa do curso: Gender discrimination is a global issue, affecting all the spheres of public and private life. Everywhere in the world gender identities are the cause of inequalities, discriminations and violence, spread primarily against women, but also against sexual and gender minorities.

Sociological sciences demonstrated how these phenomena are deeply rooted in mentalities and cultures, and the role played by media in creating and innovating stereotypes on gender. Most of people consider gender issues like natural (so, unchangeable) facts. Instead, social sciences showed how scientific thinking and learning on these issues enable people to develop critical self-reflexivity, now recognized as a strategic competence of global citizenship.

This course addresses these issues by proposing an overview of the most  up-to-date concepts and theories, and by promoting the anlaysis of current news and facts.

The lesson planning:
1. Why study gender issues.
2. The sociological approach to gender studies.
3. Gender identities, models and order.
4. Gender dimensions in private and social life.
5. Gender and media.
6. Gender-based violence: a cultural problem.
