Descrição: The objective of this proposal is to study Brazil’s foreign relations with the other two members of lBSA, lndia and South Africa.
Substantively, the project aims to develop two principal lines of research. The first line will focus on identifying different Brazilian commercial sectors perceptions of the prospects of the South-South relationship, particularly with regard to lndia and South Africa. This project will be the first systematic study of how various sectors of the Brazilian economy have responded to the dynamization of South-South relations, a phenomenon frequently viewed as a major shift in international relations over the last decade. This line of research will involve two approaches. The first will encompass surveys of the Brazilian private sector, with firms grouped by size and industry (see detailed description in the following section). The second will involve experimental research on trade policy to be undertaken in partnership with North Carolina State University. These experimental studies will be used to enhance the observational studies mentioned above. The second line of research will be dedicated to establishing a system to monitor, from a comparative perspective, the positions of the three countries in the most important processes of international negotiations, with particular emphasis on themes directly or indirectly related to international trade. The purpose in this case is to attempt to understand the prospects for collective action by these three countries, from the point of view of both trilateral integration and global governance.
